Welcome to Varanasi

Story

We’ve made it to Varanasi from Hyderabad, through Delhi! What a journey!

Varanasi is, for the Hindus, one of the holiest cities in India. This is a pilgrimage place where people come to wash off their sins in the river Ganges. The city is also used for the Hindu ritual of life and death, for which is is believed that spreading one’s ashes into the river will send them directly to heaven.

This photo is taken at the main Ghat (platform on the river) called Dasaswamedh, during the gang aarti celebration with pug which occurs every day. It’s very impressive, as thousands gather here every night to witness this show of fire and dancing.
